Publications and Yearbook Staffs

This is Week Twenty-Nine

Description of the Lesson:  The students will be working with a program called Microsoft Front Page this week.  They will be working with pre-designed templates to create their own personal web page.  The web page will be linked to their classroom teachers "Student Page."

    Once the students have completed their web page, they will have time to explore and enjoy educational games found within the web site Gamequarium.com.  This site has a wide variety of educational games from varied curricular areas.  They will get to the web site by clicking below:

They will visit this site and practice with:  ABC, 123, Colors, Shapes, Time, or Money.  These activities are set up for Pre-K through grades 2.

Materials:  The students will be working with the software program, Microsoft Front Page.

Skills Covered will include:

  • Launch the program we will be using for class today

  • Maximize the screen

  • Edit a Web Page Template

  • Save their Web Page

  • Export their Web Page to a Disk

  • Exit a program

Gamequarium.com will work with the following skills:

  • ABC Reviews

  • Number Reviews

  • Colors

  • Shapes

  • Time

  • Money

Kindergarten - First Enrichment:  Students will work with the Kidspiration Program to complete a science activity titled, "What Lives Here."  They will use the activity template and place pictures that represent what you might find living in the four sample locations.  The locations include the desert, forest, wetland, and farm.

Second  - Third Grade Enrichment:  The students will be working with Typing Master to practice their touch typing skills.  Once the typing lessons are completed, the students will have time to explore the web site Funisland.com.  They may choose from a number of educational games on the site for skills review and practice.

Fourth - Fifth Grade Enrichment:  The students will be working on a report for a topic they are currently studying in their regular classroom.  They will need to type their report.  The report will then be used to create a PowerPoint Presentation for the topic of their report.

News Crew Staff Meeting:  We will go to the technology lab and type their commercials as a word document.  These will then be printed out so that the students can read the work of other students in their group.  We will also be viewing tapes of the news broadcast and critique the strengths and the weaknesses of the broadcast.

  Newspaper Staff Meeting:  (The crew did not meet last week  We will continue with the lesson planned for last week's meeting.)  The students will discuss key vocabulary terms that relate to a newspaper.  We will talk about each of the terms (AP, Assignment, Background, Banner, Beat, Byline, Copy, Cutline or Caption, Dateline, Deadline, Dummy, Editor, Editorial, Feature, Headline, Index, Jumpline, Lead, Logo, Masthead, Newsprint, Publisher, Reporter, Syndicated Features, Teaser, and Wire Photo).  We will also talk about the Newspsper Staff and the departments that exist in a newspaper business. 

       Students will also practice the role of Publisher and determine which department would be assigned a list of tasks.

       The students will have a homework assignment to Find The Following In A Newspaper:

  • a page with stories, photos, and art

  • three different kinds of articles

  • an advertisement

They can also choose to do a challenging activity - Find the name of the paper's publisher and/or editor-in-chief.

Yearbook Staff Meeting:  The staff will not meet this week.
