Publications and Yearbook Staffs

This is Week Thirty - Three

Description of the Lesson:  The students will complete their personal web pages this week.  They will tour the school web site.  We will view the classroom web pages and talk about their own page that will be linked from their class page.

Materials:  The students will be using the software program, Microsoft FrontPage.  They will also be using the web browser, Internet Explorer.

Skills Covered will include:

  • Launch the program we will be using for class today

  • Maximize the screen

  • Edit a Web Page Template

  • Save their Web Page

  • Export their Web Page to a Disk

  • Exit a program

  • Open Internet Explorer

  • Browse the Internet to look at the school web site

Kindergarten Enrichment:  Students will work with the Kid Pix Deluxe 3 software to create a picture.  They will review adding a background, graphics, text, or stamps to their work.  They will also explore adding sound to their picture using the music library with the program.

First Grade Enrichment:  Students will work with the Kid Pix Deluxe 3 software to create a picture.  They will review adding a background, graphics, text, or stamps to their work.  They will also explore adding sound to their picture using the music library with the program.

Second  - Third Grade Enrichment:  The students will be working with Typing Master to practice their touch typing skills.  Once the typing lessons are completed, the students will participate in a "Virtual Field Trip" on "The Reason for the Seasons."  The students will visit the World Book On-line.  The students will then click on the link to "The Seasons" for today's activity.  The students will use the site to answer questions 1-4 on their activity sheet.  The students will also use a site, "The First Day of Spring" to answer questions 5-8 of the activity sheet.  They will visit a NASA for Kids web site, The First Day of Spring.  This site will give them more information about the seasons and why they change. 

Fourth Grade Enrichment:  The students will be working on their electronic portfolio projects.  They will work on completing the title, main menu, title for the cover letter, and about me slides of their portfolio.  We will also look at scanning documents to a disk for adding to their portfolios.

Fifth Grade Enrichment:  The students will be completing work on their topic they are currently studying in their regular classroom.  They will share their final PowerPoint Presentation with the class.  We will copy their presentation on a disk for them take back to their class and share with their class.

News Crew Staff Meeting:  We will be looking at recordings of the news to discuss ways to improve our show and correct some of the mistakes we see in the video tape.

  Newspaper Staff Meeting:  Students will be discussing the assignments they have completed.

  • Students will practice the role of Publisher and determine which department would be assigned a list of tasks.

  • Students will discuss which department would be assigned the sample stories.

  • Students will select the stories to feature on the front page of a newspaper.

  • Students will determine if examples are facts for news or opinions for an editorial.

  • Students will discuss ideas for a feature story on people, places, foods, and miscellaneous articles.

  • Students will discuss how a newspaper assigns sports reporters to a "beat."

  • Students will use a sample entertainment section from the newspaper to answer discussion questions.

Students will turn in their assignments!

Yearbook Staff Meeting:  The staff will meet to discuss the "Yearbook Parties" that are coming up next week.  K-1 will be on Wednesday, 2-3 on Thursday, and 4-5 on Friday from 2:15-2:45 on their grade levels' day.
