This is Week Ten

Description of the Lesson:  The pupils will working with desktop publishing skills as they complete their design for a box cover for a computer knowledge board game.  To create the cover, they will enter and format text, create a WordArt title, insert a graphic and apply a page border.

Materials:  The students will be using Microsoft Publisher.  They will also use a Template titled "Box.pub".

Skills Covered will include:

  • Define desktop publishing program

  • Open a document stored on a disk

  • Zoom in and out on a page

  • Use the scroll bar

  • Discuss enhancing a cover's appearance

  • Select tools from the toolbar menu

  • Add a text frame

  • Define layout grids

  • Enter text

  • Define font

  • Resize a text frame

  • Center text

  • Bold text

  • Select the picture frame tool

  • Create a graphics frame

  • Define clipart

  • Access the Science & Technology category

  • Insert an image

  • Change the color scheme of the project

  • Save the new additions to their document on a disk

Additional Skills Covered will include:

  • Defining the Internet - an international network of computers connecting schools, government agencies, and other organizations for the purpose of sharing information.  This information is transfered primarily through telephone lines which link the computers together.

  • Discuss loggin on to a computer and the Internet

  • Launch a web browser

  • Define World Wide Web - a large part of the Internet where users can access millions of Web pages containing text, graphics, and other elements.

  • Access the school web site.

  • Discuss our school web pages - including the technology lab links, lesson plans, and curriculum pages.

  • Explore sample web sites that demonstrate games and/or game boards or boxes that can be found for purchase in the United States.

  • Explore and play games on the Internet with the remaining class time.

  • Take student pictures for their personal web page on the Internet if they have the proper permission slips returned.
