This week's rotation schedule includes grades 3 - 5.

This lesson is continued from the students' previous visit.  The classes will continue to work on the skills presented in this lesson. 
(The students who have missed will work today to catch up and complete the lesson.)

This is Week Sixteen

Description of the Lesson:  After a brief exploration of the Internet to review sites used during their last visit, the children will use their desktop publishing skills to complete eight squares for the computer board game.  They will design a WordArt Title, create a border and add a shadow to WordArt text.  Then, the students will group and align the objects to finish the squares..

Materials:  The students will be using our web browser, Internet Explorer, and Microsoft Publisher 2000.  They will also use a Template titled "tech.pub".

Skills Covered will include:

  • Define the Internet - an international network of computers connecting schools, government agencies and other organizations for the purpose of sharing information

  • Discuss logging onto the computer and the Internet

  • Launch a web browser

  • Define World Wide Web - a large part of teh Internet where users can access millions of Web pages containing text, graphics, and other elements

  • Define hypertext - text or graphics linked to other Web pages, creating a quick and easy way to access related Web sites

  • Log off the Internet

  • Launch our template for today's lesson from a file on the desktop of your computer

  • Zoom in to 150 percent

  • Read the text

  • Display layout guides - appear on all pages of a publication to assist users in positioning text and graphics (review vocabulary word)

  • Create a text frame inside an area on the template

  • Enter text

  • Change text size

  • Resize a text frame

  • Reposition information on the page

  • Define grouping - grouping objects allows a user to reposition and resize multiple objects as one large object

  • Group objects and verify the grouping

  • Scroll on the page

  • Define WordArt - a feature in Publisher that creates fancy titles out of regular text

  • Create a WordArt frame

  • Stretch text

  • Add a shadow to text

  • Select and apply border

  • Discuss CD-ROM and Disk Drives

  • Create a graphics frame

  • Locate and insert a graphic

  • Define modem - converts telephone signals into a format that can be understood by the CPU and vice versa

  • Define layering - a term which refers to positioning objects behind or in front of one another in a document

  • Layer frames in the document

  • Center objects on the screen

  • Align objects on the screen

  • Add a colored pattern to WordArt
