Syllabus

Course description:

            Digital imagery is a year long advanced high school course focused on training in technology and the visual arts. Digital imagery builds on a foundation of studio art and computer graphic design, which are prerequisites for this course.  Students explore their creative nature through a variety of media and learning styles, culminating in a final portfolio at the end of the year. Students work individually and in teams to create artworks in a variety of media, such as: computer based graphic design and layout, digital photography, digital animation, digital web page design, and digital video production and video editing.  Digital imagery students will also foster an increased sense of design sensibility and critical problem solving skills through class critiques and reflective writing and journal entries. Students will initiate self-directed learning in the classroom in pursuit of knowledge related to the professional fields associated with commercial art and design, and studio production.  Additionally, topics dealing with ethics and computing, intellectual property rights law, and website evaluation will be covered in this course.

Objective:

            Upon completion of digital imagery, students will demonstrate proficiency with the concepts and tools of various advanced digital design media.

The digital imagery student will:

Create, research, explore, manipulate, synthesize, critique, and evaluate ideas, artwork, and new media, while making career connections and evaluations through their own work.

Assessment: Several projects will be required over the course of the year. In addition, a cumulative notebook must be kept.  Projects (portfolio pieces) will be assessed using rubrics, while the notebook will be checked for required components, such as article reviews, reflective writing, and other assigned tasks.

• ” 3-Ring binder
• Paper
• Pen/pencil
• 2 “HI 8mm” Digital Video tapes (blank)

Optional Materials:

• 128 MB or larger flash drive
• Blank CD’s

Text: A variety of media will be used for this course, including print and electronic news articles, as well as technical publications and online reviews and tutorials.
